How to Support Your Kiddo During Test Season: Confidence, Calm, and a Little Fun!

Test season can be stressful—not just for the students, but for parents too! When it’s time for those big assessments that cover everything they’ve learned, the focus often shifts from studying specific material to keeping calm, staying confident, and knowing that they’ve done their best throughout the year. As parents, we want to help our kids feel prepared and supported, even if there’s no “studying” to be done in the traditional sense. Here's how you can help your child stay confident and calm during test season—and even make it fun!

1. Positive Pep Talks: Build Confidence Before Test Day

When test season rolls around, one of the most important things you can do is help your child build confidence. Remind them that this test isn’t about memorizing facts or acing every question—it’s about showing what they’ve learned over time. The goal is for them to give their best effort, and that’s enough. You can do this with some positive pep talks that are focused on effort, growth, and learning rather than the outcome.

Try saying things like:

  • "You’ve worked hard all year, and this test is just a way for you to show all the amazing things you’ve learned!"

  • "I’m proud of you no matter what because I know you’re giving it your all."

  • "Remember, it’s just one test. You’ve got this!"

With a little encouragement, you’ll help them feel empowered and ready to take on the challenge without overwhelming pressure.

2. Relaxation is Key: Calm Minds Lead to Better Focus

Test-taking can bring out a lot of anxiety in kids, but you can help them manage that stress in a positive way. On the morning of the test (and even the day before), set aside some time to talk with your child and help them relax. This could be as simple as taking a few deep breaths together, stretching, or practicing mindfulness techniques. Encourage them to approach the test with a calm mind, and remind them that it’s okay to take deep breaths if they start to feel nervous during the test.

And for those of us who could use a little reminder too—parents can practice relaxation, too! You’re a role model for your child, so show them how to stay calm and positive.

3. Take the Pressure Off with an Activity After the Test

When the test is over, help your child unwind with something fun and stress-free. A reward doesn’t have to be extravagant—it could be as simple as heading outside for some fresh air and playtime or treating them to a special ice cream after school. Physical activity or a fun outing can help them release any tension and feel great about completing the test. A small reward helps to keep things light and shows them that no matter the outcome, you’re proud of their effort.

Some fun ideas:

  • Outdoor Play: Whether it’s a trip to the park or just a backyard game, getting outside to run around will help shake off any lingering stress.

  • Ice Cream or a Special Snack: Treat them to their favorite sweet treat—because who doesn’t love a little reward after working hard?

  • Family Movie Night: Take the whole family to unwind with a movie marathon and enjoy some downtime together.

It’s all about reinforcing the idea that tests don’t define them, and that self-care and relaxation are just as important as academic performance.

4. Focus on the Process, Not Just the Score

As parents, we sometimes get caught up in the results, but it’s important to remind your kids that tests are just one snapshot of their learning. It’s the effort and perseverance that matter most. Focus on what they’ve learned, how they’ve grown, and the progress they’ve made—rather than just the grade on the test. When kids feel supported and recognized for their hard work, it can take the pressure off and help them see that success is measured in many ways.

5. Set a Healthy Routine Before the Big Day

A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast are essential for success during test season. Make sure your child gets plenty of rest the night before the test, as a well-rested brain is much more alert and focused. On test day, a balanced breakfast with protein, whole grains, and fruit can help keep their energy levels stable throughout the test. You want your child to feel prepared, but also comfortable and ready to take on the day with their best foot forward.

Test season doesn’t have to be all about pressure and stress. By supporting your child with confidence-building pep talks, calming routines, and a little fun after the test, you can help them tackle their assessments with a positive mindset. And remember, as parents, it’s just as important for you to stay calm and positive too. Your support will go a long way in helping your child feel confident, capable, and ready to take on any challenge!

Bonus Tip for Parents:

And when all else fails—take a deep breath, remind yourself that you’ve got this, and treat yourself to a little reward too. You’re not just cheering your kids on—you’re doing an amazing job yourself!
